We Have a Pope! Benedict XVI, the new book by St. Paul Center fellow, Dr. Matthew E. Bunson, is the first Catholic biography of the new pope to be issued in the English-language.
The author of more than 30 books, Dr. Bunson was special consultant on Catholic affairs for USA Today during its coverage of the 2005 papal funeral and conclave.
His new book begins with a moving description of the final days and the death of Pope John Paul II and an insightful look at the conclave that elected the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to be the Church's 265th pope.
Dr. Bunson writes: "Lost in the controversies, the deep theological documents and treatises, and the unfair caricatures that have been drawn of him over the decades, Benedict XVI is a man of prayer, of culture, of learning, and of deep faith."
Assessing the challenges facing the new pontificate, he concludes: "Pope Benedict XVI speaks with an optimism of a new springtime for the Church. Such confidence is rooted in his trust in the Holy Spirit, the same guiding Spirit who first called him to the priesthood and then asked him to accept the Ring of the Fisherman. As he exclaimed to the jubilant throng assembled in St. Peter's Square on the afternoon of his election, 'Let us move forward in the joy of the Risen Lord, confident of His unfailing help!"
We Have a Pope! Benedict XVI is published by Our Sunday Visitor and is available in our on-line bookstore.
